Serial dating is not new to online dating, by any means. People have been serial dating since time began. But online dating certainly enables serial dating and allows it to prosper. A typical online dating profile comment is this one from a woman in Cleveland, Ohio:
I just want to be honest & say if you are a serial dater, or into having a date for every day of the week, then I am not the woman for you.
There is no one-size-fits-all definition for "serial dater":
- You go out once a week on dates with different people--but none of them are what you want?
- You date someone until you go to bed with them...then move onto the next person?
We like to think that you are a serial dater if you have gone out with many different people--and have found some legitimate matches. But instead of trying to build a relationship with any one person, you decide to move on. It's like you're driven by the zeal of always finding the next new, big thing.
It's important to point out that a serial dater is not a player (opportunistic; unwilling to go out on dates) or even a player-dater (like a player, he is mainly interested in sex, but he also enjoys dating).
So, it's not the frequency of dating as much as the lack of willingness to dig in and try to make it work with someone who seems like they might be a good match.
