OKCupid is a pretty smart, intuitive dating service; The Dating Gurus heartily endorse it. But, like anything else, there are ways to make it a little better. Here are a few simple tweaks you may not know about:
1. The Mysterious, Hidden Settings Button
It's like OKCupid doesn't want you to know about this feature. Why else would they hide it away--unlabelled and in a color the same as its background?
It's your portal to the Settings area. It's the mysterious blue rectangle that looks like a little TV screen.
2. Anonymous Browsing
This is why Settings is hidden*. Click the blue rectangle, then Settings, then General.
Here is your ticket to anonymity. You can look at OK Cupid members without them seeing you. The only problem is that you cannot see them, either.
(* = OKCupid doesn't like anonymous browsing so much.)
3. OK Cupid Membership Buys the Kind of Anonymity You WANT
Ah ha! But you actually can browse anonymously and still see who is browsing you.
This superhero power? It's called OK Cupid A-List Membership. For $9.95/month you can do just that.
All of the other so-called features are pretty much worthless (no ads, "special match search options," store up to 5,000 messages).
4. The "Last Online" Notifier
This feature is hugely, insanely valuable--and it's free!
On the right-hand side, under His/Her Details, is a clock that tells you when the person was last online.
"But," you're saying to me, "OK Cupid naturally would serve up the newest, freshest profiles. Right? Why would it serve profiles that are old?"
Because, for some perverse reason, OK Cupid does just that. You need to be on the look-out for the "freshness" of these profiles.
If someone hasn't been online in a year, six months, or even three months, they will not be responding to your message. Believe this.
5. Don't Answer If You Don't Want To
One thing The Dating Gurus like about OK Cupid is that, unlike other stinky dating services that force you into answering dumb questions, OK Cupid allows you flexibility...
...Flexibility to Be You and Me!
Don't like the question? Don't answer. Just put a period or dash, and OK Cupid will accept it as an answer.
6. Disable Account--No Repercussions!
Tired of the dating life--for now? You can always delete your OK Cupid account.
Better than that: Disable Account. Disable allows you to retain your profile and come back anytime you like (Delete gets rid of all information forever).
