Hi.

We're just like you.  We connected through an online dating service--OK Cupid, to be exact.  Our first date was at a fun Seattle tapas-and-sangria bar.  We fell in love.  We are engaged to be married.  We know that you, too, can find love.  Let us help you.

Hey, Men: Is Your Dating Profile Sensual Enough?

"Sensual! Have I just walked into the wrong article?" Is that what you're thinking? I'm talking to you, pal. You of the toughened knuckles and the mud-splattered truck. Yes, you.

The word sensual got kidnapped a long time ago and turned into something meaning soft and airy and fairy. Other people think it means sexual (not). So what is it?

Sensual = Of the Senses

It's pretty simple. It just means that it's related to the senses: sight, smell, touch, taste.

Every single fiction-writing treatise on Earth since Aristotle's Poetics says you should incorporate the senses in your work.

Lack of senses makes the work dull and flat. Bringing in the senses gives your work (in the case of dating profiles the work is you) life, verve, and interest.

Hey, Dating Profiles Aren't Fiction, Though!

No, but profiles do present the best possible version of your reality.

Apply a few fiction-writing skills to your dating profile. Want some examples?

Not This:

I like to go out to gourmet restaurants because they usually have good food and incomparable wines.

But This Instead:

I love nothing more than a crisp, chilled white wine and salty pommes frites.

Salty! Crisp! Cool! We can all relate to those things because they appeal to our senses.

Avoid loading up your profile with too much sensual talk or you'll start to sound like a pompous ass. Apply it in careful doses.
